Barcode symbologies

Barcodes used for library materials, textbooks and resources are usually composed of the following four pieces of information:

  • Type identifier: A character used to distinguish the barcodes belonging to patrons, library materials and textbooks.
  • Location code: Up to 5 characters that represent the institution or library housing the item. It serves to identify the materials that belong to a particular school or library. Part of the Fixed Characters.
  • Item number: Sequentially assigned numbers representing the item barcoded. Can be up to 9 numeric digits.
  • Check digit: The last character in a barcode. It ensures accurate readings when barcodes are scanned. An algorithm based on the previous characters determines this character; therefore, it changes for every barcode. Used in Code 39 Mod 10, Code 39 Mod 43, and other symbologies.

All but the item number are optional components. The order of the components may vary except for the check digit, which always remains in the last position. Destiny® groups the "Type identifier" and "Location code" into the Fixed Characters.

Destiny can recognize the following barcode symbologies:

  • Follett Classic
  • Generic Code 39
  • Code 39 mod 10
  • Code 39 mod 43

Typically, you will only need to configure your barcode symbologies when setting up Destiny.
