Print spine and pocket labels
You can print labels based on a file or list of barcode numbers, the acquisition date and time of the copies, a Resource List, a category, a barcode list, or a barcode range.
If you want to export your data to Microsoft Excel, click Export to Excel.
To print labels
- Open Library Reports or Media Reports in Reports and select Spine/Pocket Labels.
- If you are a district cataloger, select either the district or a single site from the For list.
If you select the district, the printing is limited to the first 1,000 qualifying labels. In addition, you cannot base the printing on a barcode list or a barcode range.
- From the Sort by list, select a sort order for the copies: Call Number or Date/Time Copies Added.
- From the Based on list, select a method for identifying the copies to include:
- List: If you have multiple Resource Lists, select the one needing the labels.
To review the contents of the Resource List, click View List.
- Copy Category: Select a copy category from the list.
If you are a district cataloger generating labels for a school, you can select a category specific to either your district or the school you chose. When generating labels for the district, you can only select a district category.
- Barcode List: Either create a new list, or select an existing barcode file:
- To create a new list, place the cursor in the Create a barcode list box and scan the barcodes, or type them in and click Add. To remove a barcode number from the list, select it and click Remove.
- To select an existing file, click Browse to locate and select your file.
- Barcode Range: Enter the starting and ending barcode numbers in the boxes. The printing includes only labels for barcode numbers that are in use; it skips any that are unused.
- You can leave both boxes blank to include all the barcode numbers in use in the defined barcode symbology.
- If you leave the first box blank and enter a number in the second box, the printing includes labels for all used barcode numbers up to and including the number in the second box.
- If you enter a number in the first box and leave the second box blank, the printing includes labels for that number and all those after it.
- Date/Time Copies Added
- If you chose Date/Time Copies Added, enter a beginning date and time next to From and an ending date and time next to To. Click the calendar icon for a calendar. Optionally, enter the time in the following format: <hour>:<minute> (for example, 7:00).
If you chose List or Copy Category, you can also enter a date and time. This allows you to further limit the printing. If you leave it blank, the dates the copies were added are ignored.
- Select your label stock and the starting label.

- Select the font size for the spine labels. You can choose 10, 12 or 14 points from the Call number font size drop-down. The font is Arial Bold. Note that this selection applies only to the call number on the spine labels, not the volume number or copy number, nor to pocket or circulation labels.
- If you do not want the printing to start a new line after each space in the call number, deselect the Start a new line at every space checkbox. Note that this selection applies only to spine labels, not circulation or pocket labels.
- To generate the labels, click Run Report.
- When the Report Manager opens, click View to open the label report.
- After positioning the label stock in your printer, use Adobe Reader's toolbar button or menu command to print the labels.
Make sure to clear the Page Handling options on Adobe's Print dialog.
Label content
The spine labels contain the copy's call number and any volume or issue descriptions and numbers, and any copy number included in the copy record.
If the call number is longer than the label width allows, Destiny breaks the number at the first space, or at a decimal point. For the best labels, make sure you purchase the label stock that accommodates your call number size.
The circulation and pocket labels contain the call number, author, and title.
Print order
The labels print in call number order.
For district catalogers printing labels for the entire district, the labels are first sorted alphabetically by library, then by call number.
Export to Excel
You can export content to a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet (.xls) format, providing ways to manipulate the generated report data.

- Click Export to Microsoft Excel.
- Click Run Report.
- Click Refresh List until the report status displays Completed.
- Click View. Microsoft Excel launches, and the report with preselected fields appears.
